Football season is just about here, and a new study shows that a loss from your favorite team could mean a gain for you.

Researchers took a look at what happens to fans the day after an NFL game and found that supporters of the winning team tended to eat healthier foods. Fans of the losing team, in contrast, opted to eat more saturated fats and sugars.

Losing fans ate 16 percent more saturated fat than they usually ate on a Monday, and fans of the winning team ate about nine percent less.

Why does it happen? Researchers think that when a team wins, it boosts fans' self control. But when a team loses, fans feel an identity threat.

Researchers looked at fans in more than 20 cities over two NFL seasons.

The study was recently published in Psychological Science.
