Spray tans can pose a health hazard, according to a new study.

Spray-on tan liquid contains the chemical dihydroxy-acetone, or DHA. A new study shows that inhaling or ingesting the chemical can cause mutations that promote the growth of cancers, including lung cancer.

"When you do the spray tanning using dihydroxy-acetone, there could be a risk that if it is absorbed or inhaled, it could be affecting the lungs but also in the circulation affect other organs," said dermatologist Leyda Bowes.

The study involved tests on live cells, not actual humans.

Dr. Bowes recommended that anyone getting a spray tan wear protective undergarments, masks and goggles.
