NEW YORK (AP) — Robert Caro, Junot Diaz and the late Anthony Shadid (Shah-'DEED) are among the finalists for the National Book Awards.

Other nominees announced Wednesday were novelists Dave Eggers and Louise Erdrich and nonfiction writers Anne Applebaum and Katherine Boo. Twenty authors, five each in four competitive categories, were picked. The winners will be announced Nov. 14.

Caro was cited for the fourth of his Lyndon Johnson books, "The Passage of Power." Diaz's nomination was for "This is How You Lose Her," a series of stories about love. Shadid, a correspondent for The New York Times who died early this year, was a finalist for his memoir "House of Stone."
