GARDEN CITY -- There has been a battle brewing over a mile-and-a-half stretch of the Greenbelt for more than a decade. The stretch in Garden City has been closed to bicyclists.
Voters rejected Initiative A that would have repealed the bike ban on that stretch of the Greenbelt. When all the ballots were counted, 56.9% said 'no' to the repeal, and 43.1% said 'yes.'
The other Greenbelt initiative, Initiative B, passed. It states that any restrictions on non-motorized travel will now have to go before voters in the community.
Initiative B was a tight decision. In the end, 52.4% of voters supported it and 47.6% said 'no.'
