Governor recognizes young robotics teams

The governor signed a proclamation today during a Statehouse ceremony.

Gov. Butch Otter recognized some pretty smart young people today.

He did so by declaring August 7th through the 13th "Idaho Youth Robotics Week."

Otter signed the proclamation in front of dozens of students with proven high-tech skills.

The students are members of three different teams that took part in a robotics competition at Taco Bell Arena earlier this year, and their hard work was recognized today.

"I enjoy designing things, working with my hands, working with other people to design something that completes a task in a fashion that's efficient and effective," said junior Garrett Wells, Team Taters from Boise.

"I just like the whole problem solving aspect where you have to look at a problem and then tackle it, and then come up with multiple solutions," said seventh grader Avery Vaughn, High Voltage Couch Bananas from Eagle.

"The world is changing into ways that science and technology are becoming more prominent," said sophomore Patrick Miller, Beauty Bots and the Beasts from Caldwell.

Today's proclamation also recognizes the importance of Idaho's focus on STEM education -- that's science, technology, engineering and match.
