05:46 PM MDT on Friday, May 16, 2008
MERIDIAN -- Six officers were honored and one was remembered today during a ceremony this morning at the Idaho Peace Officer Memorial in Meridian.
Idaho's Medal of Honor winners were pinned today by friends and family.
Five of the officers were recognized for their courageous actions in Moscow, Idaho, after a gunman began firing at the Latah County Sheriff's offices almost one year ago.
Special recognition was given to Officer Lee Newbill of the Moscow Police Department who was killed on May 19, 2007. He is the 64th Idaho peace officer whose name has been added to the memorial wall.
A group of people in white shirts marched to Idaho's Peace Officers Memorial during today’s ceremony. The white shirts symbolizes those officers killed the line of duty. They were followed by hundreds of men and women in uniforms.
The heroic actions of Officer Newbill were remembered by Moscow Police Chief Dan Weaver.
"Armed with two rifles and hundreds of round of ammunition the carnage would continue through the night. Repeated and continual rifle fire could be heard through the community," said Weaver.
On this day Lee Newbill's daughter Christina accepted the Medal of Honor.
"Who in the performance of his duties gave his life to protect life and property. We honor his memory and the supreme sacrifice he made," said Weaver.
Medals of honor were also give to five other officers involved in the Moscow sniper shooting. They are Moscow Police Officer Jesse Applehans, Sergeant Phil Gray, Sergeant Brannon Jordan, Deputy Ryan Stiller, and Deputy Jay Waters -- all from the Latah County Sheriffs Office.
Sgt. Brannon Jordan was wounded by the gunman. He told us what this day meant to him.
"To me it the closing chapter in the events of the first year," said Jordan.
And for Christina Newbill, she is still learning to deal with what happened to her father.
"You know moving on, life goes on, it doesn't just stop for one thing. I just try to make my dad proud," said Christina Newbill.
As the names of those who had fallen were read aloud, family members and friends know the dangers these officers face are never ending.
Also during today’s ceremony, Boise Police Officer Brek Orton was presented the Medal of Honor for saving a woman from drowning in the Boise River.
