Joseph Duncan arrives for a hearing at the Boise Centre on the Grove Monday.

BOISE - Former friends of confessed killer Joseph Duncan took the stand today and detailed strange behavior in the days leading to Duncan's killing rampage.

Several days after leaving his apartment in North Dakota and heading west, Duncan sent an e-mail to his neighbor asking her to feed his two cats. Upon entering Duncan's apartment Joni Buzick and the landlords found writings on a mirror hanging on the wall.

Under a heading of "Time for a reality check," it read "The only cure for crime is love and forgiveness. Everything else is just crime."

This same witness testified about Duncan's revealing Web site.

Under the heading of "The Demons have taken over," Duncan writes, "As far as letting God take care of the demons, too late... to be more specific I am scared, alone and confused. My intent is to harm society as much as possible, then die."

That wish may come true.  He's certainly inflicted harm by kidnapping and/or killing five members of a Coeur d'Alene family.

It's up to the jury to decide if his wish to die will be carried out through the justice system.
