Police: Gunman charged after standoff at Nampa home

Nampa police surround home after shots fired.

NAMPA -- An hours-long standoff ended in the early hours of Wednesday morning when the  suspect surrendered to Nampa Police.

Sammie Joe Hurlbut, 61, is facing charges of  felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor discharge of a firearm within city limits.

Police were called out to a home in the 1600 block of Lava Avenue at about 9 p.m. Tuesday after receiving reports that a man was firing shots inside the house. Officers arrived to find a 37-year-old man outside the house, who told them Hurlbut had threatened him with a gun and fired the gun inside the house.

As officers were on scene, they heard several more gunshots coming from inside the home.

Police called in a SWAT team and evacuated nearby residents. Gunshots inside the house continued during that time.

Nampa Police say it did not appear that Hurlbut was shooting at officers, and no one else was inside the house at the time.

SWAT officers negotiated with the suspect for about four hours before he agreed to come out of the home and surrender, ending the standoff at about 1: 06 a.m.

"Eventually he did give up without police having to use any force against him," Nampa Police spokesman Tim Riha said. "Indications are that he has some minor injuries, but no gunshot wounds and he is being tended to now."

According to police, Hurlbut's injuries were self-inflicted. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, then booked into the Canyon County Jail.

Police say the suspect was charged in a similar incident last year, after police were called out to the same neighborhood to find Hurlbut shooting his gun in the backyard of a home in March 2016.

Hurlbut ultimately pleaded guilty to misdemeanor exhibition of a deadly weapon in connection with the 2016 incident. He was sentenced to probation, barred from owning firearms for one year, and ordered to undergo mental health treatment.
