MERIDIAN -- Police are asking for the public's help finding a man accused of gunning down two people inside a Meridian apartment Tuesday night.
The shooting happened at around 10:47 p.m. at the Cherry Lane Apartments on East Gruber Avenue.
Police say 33-year-old Marco Luis Romero of Nampa shot a 29-year-old man twice in the legs and a 29-year-old woman once in the chest. Although the woman was originally listed in critical condition, she had been upgraded to stable condition by 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The male victim is also doing well, although he remains hospitalized, according to police.
Meridian Police Deputy Chief Tracy Basterrechea said the shooter knows both victims, and went to their apartment with a relative.
"He was actually brought to this residence by another family member, who he also attempted to shoot, but missed," Basterrechea said.
By the time emergency responders got to the scene, Romero was gone. It's unclear whether he fled on foot or in a car. He remained at large Wednesday morning.
Basterrechea said police don't have a motive for the attack, but noted Romero's family members had become increasingly concerned about his behavior over the past week.
"We do know from some of the initial interviews with witnesses that Romero was acting very strangely lately, very erratic," he said.
According to Idaho Department of Correction records, Romero was released from prison on parole last month on Oct. 3. He had been serving time for drug possession and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury or death.
The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. He was last seen wearing a plain black T-shirt and jeans. The shooting is not connected to the election, Basterrechea said.
Anyone who spots Romero or knows where he is is asked not to approach him, but to call 911 immediately. Basterrechea said investigators are worried the suspect may have plans to hurt additional victims.
"If you know Romero, if you see Romero, please contact us immediately so we can take him into custody," he said. "We're very concerned about the safety of other people that Romero may have a grudge against - his mindset, we don't know exactly what is going on with him right now."
