PAUL, Idaho -- A 36-year-old farm worker charged with shooting another man in the leg in a south-central Idaho potato field says the gun accidentally went off as he pointed it at his co-worker's foot in an effort to avoid another fight with the man.

Rogelio Munoz Chavez of Paul was arraigned Wednesday in Minidoka County Court on a felony charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The Times-News reports witnesses told investigators Chavez retrieved the gun after fellow workers broke up a fight between Chavez and 31-year-old Encornacion Duarte-Jabalera.

Court records say Chavez reported the shooting to his employer and said Duarte-Jabalera needed an ambulance before he fled. He was found not long after the shooting hiding in some bushes.

Duarte-Jabalera was hospitalized in good condition on Thursday.
