BLISS, Idaho -- Authorities say two people are in critical condition after a car chase ended in south-central Idaho when the female driver stopped and shot her male passenger and in turn was shot by police.

The chase started about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 84 when police pulled over a vehicle for no headlights.

Police say the vehicle took off but was stopped again in Bliss when other agencies joined the pursuit.

Police say the male passenger got out with his hands up as directed by police but was shot for unknown reasons by the female driver.

Police say the driver turned the gun toward a Gooding County deputy, who opened fire.

Gooding County Sheriff Shaun Gough says the couple is from Colorado Springs.  The woman has been identified as 39-year-old Hollee Johnston.  Her boyfriend, 40-year-old Ronald Rice suffered a single-gunshot wound to abdomen.

Authorities say they were air-lifted to Saint Alphonsus in Boise where they were listed in critical condition.

Gough says Johnston faces charges of aggravated battery and possession of methamphetamine.
