BAKER CITY, Ore. -- A prosecutor says a Baker County, Ore., grand jury has declined to indict a woman who owned a pit bull that killed a 5-year-old boy last month, finding there was insufficient evidence to support criminal charges.

The Baker City Herald reports that District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff announced the decision Thursday.

Shirtcliff says Michele Ryan took her young son, Jordan, to visit family friend Mary Lane on Sept. 27. While the women were inside, the boy went out and entered a fenced backyard area where the pit bull was kept. Another child found Jordan being mauled by the dog.

The newspaper says Lane had owned the dog for about six weeks. Baker City police investigated and found no evidence the dog had previously acted aggressively toward people. The dog was euthanized.
