ONTARIO, Ore. – An Ontario man who tried to hide from police after crashing his SUV has been arrested.

Oregon State Police say 27-year-old Brandon Daniel West of Ontario was southbound on Highway 201N and rounding a curve to westbound Highway 20 when his Ford Excursion crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic. He overcorrected and the SUV went off the highway, landing on its top in a field. Officers responded to the scene around 10:30 p.m.

A witness told police the male driver fled on foot, was intoxicated and appeared to have been injured.

About 25 minutes later, an Ontario Police officer found a man hiding in an irrigation ditch about a half mile away from the crash scene. The witness positively identified him as the driver who fled the overturned SUV.

West had a minor injury but declined medical treatment. Police learned he was on parole for criminally negligent homicide.

West was arrested for felony DUII, reckless driving, and failure to perform the duties of a driver involved in a property damage crash. He was booked into the Malheur County Jail.
