COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- A federal judge has sentenced a Winchester man to 30 years in prison for shooting and killing his mother last year.

Forty-eight-year-old Kenneth Broncheau pleaded guilty in May to second-degree murder for the slaying of Carol Haskell at their residence on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation.

U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson says the stiff prison term is appropriate given the senseless, intentional act that took Haskell's life.

Prosecutors said Broncheau fired two shots from his rifle on the night of June 21, with the second one hitting his mother in the torso. She died of the gunshot wound. But Broncheau then poured gasoline on the body and set it ablaze before a neighbor responding to screams and gunshots took the gun from Broncheau's hands.
