RUPERT -- Minidoka County Sheriff Kevin Halverson was charged Friday morning with misuse of public funds by a public official, a felony.

According to court records, Deputy Attorney General Jason Slade Spillman filed the charges. The Minidoka County prosecutor asked the Attorney General's Office to investigate possible misuse of public funds earlier this year.

The filings accuse Halverson of using Minidoka County financial transaction cards to buy gas for personal purposes between November 2012 and January 2013. According to the complaint, the amount was less than $300.

A legal secretary told investigators Sheriff Halverson's fuel use was unusually larger than other county sheriff's office employees. The secretary found evidence the sheriff was buying fuel for a female employee who works in the driver's license division.

As stated in court documents, a sheriff's office captain told investigators, "Sheriff Halverson is in the office 70 percent of the time and has a higher fuel bill than anyone else...[The captain] called this a red flag."

The sheriff told investigators he has never used his county-issued card for unreimbursed personal purchases because he knew that would be fraudulent.

In filings, there are pages of text message transcripts between Halverson and the female employee discussing buying gas.

Halverson is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge on July 18.
