TWIN FALLS -- A Twin Falls man faces eight to 20 years in prison for attacking another man with a machete during a drunken argument in May, causing injuries prosecutors initially believed would kill the victim.

The Times-News reports Martin Hernandez-Vargas was sentenced Monday by 5th District Judge Randy Stoker.

Hernandez-Vargas was convicted of aggravated battery for an attack that left a 53-year-old man with traumatic injuries to his head and face that left him unconscious for more than two days.

Prosecutor Stan Holloway said the victim had to leave a job he'd held for 15 years and move to Arizona to live with family due to his injuries and other health issues.

Defense attorney Ben Anderson sought a more lenient sentence, nothing the victim acknowledged pushing Hernandez-Vargas during the fight that neither man clearly remembers.
