MOSCOW, Idaho -- A former Latah County sheriff's office employee has been sentenced to two to five years in prison for embezzling more than $56,000 from office funds from 2007 to 2011.
Second District Judge John Stegner sentenced Rhonda Bunney on Tuesday. She had earlier pleaded guilty to misuse of public funds. Court records say a restitution hearing is set for Friday.
Both the defense and prosecutor recommended a probationary sentence, but Stegner said the theft involved a large amount of money over a period of several years and a probationary sentence would do nothing to deter similar crimes.
Stegner retained jurisdiction and set a court appearance for Dec. 16 to review the case and consider whether to reduce Bunney's sentence.
