BOISE – A former Boise resident known as the “duffel bag bandit” has pleaded guilty to bank robbery.

U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olsen says 56-year-old Gerald Massey entered the guilty plea in federal court Tuesday.

Massey went into the U.S. Bank branch at 10700 Ustick Road in Boise on March 6, 2013.  In his plea agreement, he admitted to coercing the bank manager to let him into the vault and then stealing $64,500.

He also admitted to counseling a witness to lie to FBI agents about his knowledge of Massey’s crimes.

Massey was arrested in Shreveport, La., in August 2013.

Massey has agreed to pay more than $84,000 in restitution.  That includes monies taken in the U.S. Bank robbery and three additional bank robberies.

He faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Sentencing is set for April 1, 2014.
