BOISE -- A Garden City man convicted of killing his girlfriend's 18-month-old daughter in October of 2011 has been sentenced to life in prison.
Jordan Everhart, 22, was found guilty of first-degree murder last November. He was sentenced Monday afternoon.
Fourth District Judge Patrick Owen ordered Everhart to serve at least 20 years before he's eligible for parole.
During Monday's sentencing, Everhart's defense attorneys petitioned the judge for just 10 years in prison. However, Ada County prosecutors argued for life in prison with a 30-year fixed sentence.
Prosecutors say Everhart was watching one-year-old Alai'ja Corbin on Oct. 8, 2011 when he abused her, causing significant brain injuries. She died six days later from head trauma.
Everhart told officers the little girl had been knocked over by a dog. However, an emergency room doctor told officers the girl's injuries were consistent with a different type of accident.
During Monday's sentencing, several state witnesses, including a psychiatrist and two detectives testified in respect to Everhart's character and criminal background.
Everhart's mother also took the stand, asking the judge for leniency and mercy in the case.
Everhart himself also testified, expressing regret for his actions.
