BOISE -- State lawmakers will hold a public hearing on Idaho's future health insurance exchange Tuesday afternoon.

The hearing begins at 1:30 p.m. in room WW54 before the Senate Commerce and Human Resources Committee.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Idaho must either form a state-run health insurance exchange, or take part in a federal exchange.

The mandate -- popularly known as Obamacare -- was passed into law in 2010. However, Idaho lawmakers have avoided implementing many parts of the act until now.

Just last month, a bill backed by Governor Otter outlining the specifics of Idaho's state-run health insurance exchange was introduced to lawmakers.

As we've reported, Otter's plan calls for the exchange to be run independently, with no state funds or employees.

As it stands, Idaho's exchange will be run by a 16 person board, each of whom would be appointed by the governor.

Those members will set up the specifics of selling and buying health insurance.

If you can't make Tuesday's hearing, there is another scheduled on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
