Samantha Darling, 17, is charged with two counts of arson and criminal possession of a bank card.
NAMPA -- A teenage girl is in Canyon County Jail today after investigators say she set her best friend’s house on fire.
Samantha Darling of Nampa was arrested last night and charged with two counts of arson and criminal possession of a bank card.
She is accused of setting a Nampa home on fire on May 2, 2008.
Among the many items destroyed in the fire was a prom dress that belonged to her friend Syvanna Elliot.
The 17-year-old Darling is being charged as an adult.
"The message needs to be send to these kids when they hit that age, you know what just because you are a juvenile everything is going to be fine, that's not how that worked," said Nampa Deputy Fire Chief Doug Strosnider.
"I was devastated when I found out it was her, it was really confusing," said Syvanna Elliott.
Samantha Darling was suspected of intentionally setting the fire from the outset of the investigation.
The home was a complete loss.
While trying to get over what happened to their home, the Elliott family is picking up the pieces.
They've had to rent one home to live in while theirs is being rebuilt.
And they have been waiting a long time for an arrest, for someone to be held responsible.
Before her arrest, Samantha sent text messages to the Elliots apologizing for what happened, claiming the fire was an accident.
Samantha was arraigned Thursday and remains in jail on $100,000 bond. She is due back in court on July 29th.
