CALDWELL -- Canyon County fair goers can try out the county's new voting system later this month.
Canyon County’s Elections Office will sponsor a booth at this year’s Canyon County Fair, held July 24-27 in Caldwell.
County Clerk Bill Hurst says the primary purpose of the booth is to educate voters about the new voting system.
An optically-scanned ballot will replace the old punch card ballot for the Nov. 4 General Election. The punch card ballots have been in use for more than 30 years.
The new ballots are printed on 8.5-inch by 17-inch paper. Voters will fill in an oval on the ballot to indicate their choice for each question or candidate.
The booth will include five voting stations for the public to mark their choices on a public opinion ballot. This ballot addresses a number of issues facing Canyon County residents and Canyon County government.
Hurst said these ballots will be counted by the Elections Office to further test its new vote tabulators.
The results will be forwarded to county officials for their review and published on the county Web site www.canyoncounty.org.
