Poll:
Do you agree with the city's proposal to increase parking meter rates?

BOISE -- Drivers could soon be paying more for parking in downtown Boise.

That's because a proposal before the city council would raise the rate to $1.50 for the first hour and $3 for the second hour. The current rates are $1.00 per hour.

City planners say the idea is to free up more on-street parking and push people to city parking garages. They'll hold a public hearing on the proposal July 23.

An upside to the changes: those parking downtown would still get their first 20 minutes free, and many meters would be expanded from 1-hour to 2-hour meters.

Downtown Boise is also considering a pilot program where parking enforcement would be expanded from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
