BOISE -- Idaho wildlife officials say a grizzly bear wounded by hunters Saturday morning in Island Park in eastern Idaho could pose a public safety risk and people should stay away from the area.

Steve Schmidt of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game says five hunters went to retrieve a downed elk when the grizzly charged. The hunters say they fired about a dozen shots before the bear turned and ran, leaving a blood trail from being wounded.

Schmidt says officials have decided to wait until Sunday morning to search for the bear due to the risk involved.

Schmidt says hunters reported wounding the bear in the Chick Creek area east of U.S. Highway 20.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating because grizzlies are a threatened species.
