WENDELL, Idaho -- A city worker in Wendell Idaho died Tuesday after a trench he was working on caved in, according to Mayor Kent Bates.
Bates says 43-year-old Jerrad Durfee worked for the public works department and was on a crew digging a trench for a sewer project around noon Tuesday. Durfee was using a jack hammer in a 6-foot-deep, 2-foot-wide trench when the walls collapsed, burying him. A co-worker managed to get his head and shoulders free, but Durfee died at the scene.
Bates says the city is devastated by his death.
"Jarrad was a great employee," Bates said. "There's always a handful of people you meet in your lifetime that go out of their way to do anything for you, happy-go-lucky and never complain and that was Jarrad. A volunteer fireman who touched a lot of people and helped a lot of people in the community. It's just a big loss and a terrible accident."
The Gooding County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
