BOISE -- A small, but potentially hazardous sinkhole, has formed near the intersection of 1st and Bannock Streets in east downtown Boise.

Workers with the Ada County Highway District described the feature as a "sinkhole" that appears to be the size of a softball -- but is likely much bigger inside. The hole formed underneath the St. Luke's Regional Medical Center Parking Garage.

The hole was reported Thursday night, but crews couldn't find it until Friday morning. That's when someone called Boise police to report the hole as a traffic hazard. Officers checked out the hole and cautioned drivers until road crews arrived on scene.

Workers now plan to dig up the hole and investigate the true size of the strange feature, along with what caused it.

A single lane has been blocked on 1st Street. Drivers should expect delays.
