GARDEN CITY – Two Garden City men were arrested early Tuesday morning after police found them unloading a stolen Idaho Statesman newspaper box from a pickup truck.
Garden City Police say Henry Guntrum Jr., 40, and Chad Atwood, 30, were taken into custody without incident around 4 a.m. and later booked into the Ada County Jail after being interviewed by police.
Detectives say over the past three weeks 17 coin-operated newspaper boxes have been stolen in Boise and Garden City. Total losses from the thefts exceeded $12,000.
Guntrum was identified as a possible suspect late last month and kept under surveillance.
Detectives found four newspaper boxes at Guntrum’s house in the 200 block of E. 43 rd Street in Garden City. They also found drug paraphernalia and other items from a burglary in Boise.
Seven additional newspaper boxes that were discarded off Highway 21, near Lucky Peak Dam, have also been recovered by police.
Guntrum and Atwood are each charged with grand theft. They will be arraigned on Wednesday. Additional charges may be forthcoming after the case is reviewed by the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office.
Garden City Police are attempting to recover all of the stolen newspaper boxes and ask anyone with information about the thefts to call them at 472-2950, or Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
