NORTH SPOKANE-- Emergency crews responded to Newport Hwy and Elm for reports of two officers down Tuesday around 4p.m.
Dave Reagan with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office says the incident started as a traffic stop at Highway 2 and Elm when two officers were shot.
Witnesses say they heard gun shots and saw a black SUV fleeing the scene. They said they saw two police officers down on the ground. Two witnesses went over to the officers and compressed their gunshot wounds. The witnesses say one officer had two shots to the arms and one to the leg. The other officer had at least one shot to the leg. The witnesses say the officers were coherent as paramedics arrived on scene.
One witness says she heard about 7 gun shots from inside of the Red Robin.
The suspect was described as in his 40's with longer hair, possibly a wig. Witnesses say a man – who may or may not be related to the initial crime -- broke into an elderly woman's home, assaulted her, then stole her car.
Police say they were searching for a black Honda Accord being driven north from scene by the suspect.
Crews chased the suspect driving on Highway 2, Crawford and 395. The suspect vehicle drove other cars off of the road.
The suspect in the chase reportedly shot himself in the head near Hwy 395 & Crawford. He died at the scene.
Police are searching for two more possible shooting suspects hiding inside a home at the 900 block of East Princeton. There is possibly a 2-year-old with these suspects.
3 people inside of a home on East Princeston were escorted out by police. They are not considered suspect. One of the men inside told KREM 2 police asked them to leave the home for their safety. They were handcuffed for a short time, then released out of the crime scene.
