DONNELLY, Idaho -- Despite relatively low snowpack, Tamarack ski resort will open Friday. It's the third major ski resort near the Treasure Valley to begin operation during the winter of 2013 / 2014.

Guests will receive free admission under the Feed the Need, Ski for Free promotion. To qualify, you must donate a non-perishable meal that can feed a family of four.

The resort is currently reporting 33 inches of base snowpack at the summit, 23 inches at mid-mountain, and 4 inches at the base.

While conditions look promising for the mountain's upper elevations, skiers and snowboarders will actually have to ride the lifts down from the mid-mountain area due to thin coverage.

Lift ticket prices will be discounted opening weekend: adults-$30, teens-$25, juniors-$15, and as always, those 6 and under and 70 and over ski for free.

The following terrain will be open, according to a Tamarack press release:

"Currently the plan for opening weekend is that Tamarack Express, Summit Express and Discovery Chairlifts will all be running from 9am-4pm.  Skiing will be up top off of the summit lift with terrain from The Spine to Wildwood Way open.  At the base area the Discovery Learning Area will be open along with a few terrain park features.  The crews have been hard at work making snow, but unfortunately snow coverage is pretty thin down low so all guests will be downloading the Tamarack Express lift to return to the base from mid mountain."
