DECLO -- Lennie Skaggs Junior, known to his many friends and family as "Sam," and one of Idaho's all-time most successful businessmen will be laid to rest this week at his longtime ranch in Declo.

The unassuming gentleman who rarely did media interviews took over his father's drug store chain of 11 and grew Skaggs Drug and Grocery Centers into one of the nation's top retailers, American Stores, which grossed over $20 billion in sales with nearly 300,000 employees in the early 90's.

Walk into nearly any local Albertsons store, and you will see one of his many legacies. Sav-on Drug was a partnership he formed with Joe Albertson in 1970 and remains in place in most Albertsons today.

The Skaggs Hall of Learning at the Boise State School of Business and Economics is another legacy he leaves behind.

A loving family man, prominent businessman, philanthropist, and Idahoan, Sam Skaggs was 89 when he passed away last week of natural causes.
