DECLO -- Idaho State Police closed a bridge over the Snake River for several hours Sunday after a truck crashed, catching the bridge on fire, police said.

Police say the crash happened at about 11:30 Sunday morning on Interstate 84 near the Declo/Albion exit.

The driver, 49-year-old Manuel Maynez, of El Paso, Texas was driving westbound in a Volvo semi truck when he drifted off the right shoulder and hit the guardrail, police said. One of the fuel tanks caught fire and ignited the side of the bridge. Police say the driver traveled the length of the bridge before stopping.

Maynez was not injured in the crash.Troopers blocked both westbound lanes for two and a half hours while they investigated and crews cleared the scene.

According to an Associated Press report, Idaho Transportation Department spokesman Nathan Jerke said the damage to the bridge was mostly cosmetic. He says crews will assess the damage Monday on the bridge that was already scheduled to be replaced in the next few years.
