BOISE -- Police say a transient man is in jail after he beat another man with a piece of lumber on Monday afternoon.

James G. Martin, 48, is currently in the Ada County Jail, charged with felony aggravated battery.

Police say the assault in question happened near 15th and Front streets around 1 p.m.

A passerby reported the incident to the Boise Police Department, who investigated.

BPD spokesperson Lynn Hightower said Martin used a 2"x4" or a 2"x3" board in the attack. "It was a broken-off piece of lumber," Hightower said.

When officers arrived on scene they found evidence of the attack, including a large mark on the victim's stomach.

Hightower says the victim wasn't seriously injured.

According to Idaho Code 18-906, an aggravated assault is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not to exceed five (5) years or by fine not exceeding five thousand dollars ($5,000) or by both.
