POCATELLO, Idaho -- A Pocatello man convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of his son has been ordered to spend at least seven years in prison.
Anthony Blake Viles was sentenced Tuesday by 6th District Judge Stephen Dunn. Viles was originally charged with first-degree murder in the death of 6-year-old Afton Allison in April 2012, but later the charged was reduced.
During the sentencing hearing, Viles apologized and said he thinks of his son every day.
Dunn said imposing punishment in the case was difficult and pointed to testimony that Viles didn't intend to kill his son when he struck him. Still, Dunn said it's important to send a message about the care of children.
The judge imposed a 15-year prison term, but declared Viles eligible for parole after seven years.
