BOISE -- It is opening day at Bogus Basin and skiers and snowboarders were happy to hit the slopes as the Christmas break got under way.

General Manager Alan Moore told us this is good day for the resort.

"It feels great to be open. People are up there having fun," Moore said.

Last year, Bogus Basin did not have enough snow to open during Christmas break, costing them millions in lost business.

"These are very important days for us to be open during the Christmas break. The kids are out of school. The parents bring them up," Moore said.

He estimates that between 500 and 1,000 people were already up on the slopes Friday morning. Many of those people did not seem too worried about the conditions.

Kyle Hudelson of Boise took his first snowboard ride of the new season. He said it was a little crunchy but still rideable. After having to wait until January last season, he called this a good start.

Right now, there is about a 14-inch base at the bottom of the mountain. But conditions are expected to improve soon. KTVB meteorologist Larry Gebert says a storm system is expected to move across southern Idaho this weekend, bringing more snow in the mountains and to ski resorts.

Moore says chair lifts 1, 6 and 4 are open. The others will open as conditions improve.

Bogus Basin is offering an early season discount - with lift tickets costing just $30 per day until those other chair lifts are up and running. You can also get a $10 discount coupon at local Jacksons stores by purchasing a Pepsi product.

Bogus Basin is open from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily.
