NYSSA, Ore. -- The Malheur County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accidental shooting at the home of Nyssa Police officer.

The shooting happened Tuesday evening at a home of Sergeant David Page just outside of Nyssa, Oregon.

The Malheur County Sheriff's Office was called to the home to investigate and learned that this was an unfortunate accident.

"A 15 year-old-girl had went to a closet to get a suitcase that she was going to pack for an upcoming trip. While doing that, she bumped into a hand gun, it fell from it's resting place, fell onto the floor. When it hit the floor, it hit the hammer and it discharged one round," said Malheur County Undersheriff Brian Wolfe.

The girl was hit below her knee cap when the gun discharged and was and taken to Holy Rosary Medical Center in Ontario, where she was treated and released.

The girl's father is an officer with the Nyssa Police Department.  The police chief says the gun was not the officer's duty weapon, but a personal .22 caliber revolver that he kept in his house.

Wolfe says this is a good reminder to anyone who has a gun in their home to store it safely.

"It's so easy to get complacent with our guns and with all of our firearms and so you know safety is important and always reminding ourselves to keep them safe, to keep them out of the reach of youngsters. If we do have them out, render them safe," said Wolfe.

Wolfe says no charges will be filed because nothing criminal happened.  The Nyssa Police Department also won't file charges against the officer.

Wolfe wants to remind people that most law enforcement offices have free trigger locks for gun users.  He encourages people to get gun safes and never leave your weapon loaded.
