Gooding Police believe an early morning search warrant for stolen guns across town led to the targeted attack on a police officer's home.
“When the officer returned to his home, he noticed windows had been shot out and siding had been shot on the front and south side of the home," said Gooding Police Chief Jeff Perry.
While the officer wasn't home at the time of the attack, his wife and baby boy were inside, asleep and unaware that shots had been fired.
But next door, neighbors Joyce and Claude Scanlon heard it all.
"You don't expect it to happen in your town and in your neighborhood," said Joyce Scanlon. “You can distinguish what gunshots sound like. There were five shots, one right after another.”
Authorities are taking the attack very seriously.
"We take any shooting in the city seriously, but with it being a law enforcement officer's home, that ups the ante and tells us the person or persons who did this have no fear,” Perry said. “If they're willing to do this to a law enforcement officer's house, then you're willing to do this to anybody's house.”
Police believe a trio of known troublemakers is behind this crime -- a 16, 17 and 20-year-old with supposed gang affiliations and previous arrests for battery and burglary.
These suspects are considered armed and dangerous and are still at large.
As is standard procedure in cases like this, Idaho State Police is the lead investigating agency to avoid any conflicts of interest.
