LEWISTON -- A jury in north-central Idaho says a Lapwai man committed aggravated assault but not attempted murder during a dispute involving a gun earlier this year.

The Lewiston Tribune reports 25-year-old Michael Wilson was acquitted of the more serious charge Thursday. Nez Perce County prosecutors said Wilson tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend's new fiance in a jealous rage on May 5. But Wilson's defense attorney Robert Van Idour argued that the witnesses in the case weren't credible and that it would sheer stupidity for Wilson to try to carry out a murder in broad daylight with plenty of witnesses around. Van Idour said Wilson only intended to get in a fistfight.

The jury agreed, convicting him of the assault charge, burglary and a weapons enhancement.
