BOISE -- The Idaho Court of Appeals has ordered a new trial for an arena football player who was convicted of raping a woman at the Grove Hotel.
In the ruling handed down Tuesday, the appellate court said Maurice Ronald Troutman was denied his right to due process when a prosecutor in his 2007 rape trial misstated Troutman's defense during closing arguments.
Troutman, of Long Beach, Calif., played for an arena football team called the Bakersfield Blitz, and on July 7, 2007, the team was playing against the Boise Burn in Boise. Prosecutors said that after the game, Troutman entered a woman's hotel room and had sex with her while she was unconscious or unable to resist because she had consumed alcohol and a sleeping pill.
Troutman maintained the woman was alert and an active participant.
