BOISE -- Today is regarded as one of the busiest travel days of the year.
Millions of people head out today to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday.
It has been a busy morning at the Boise Airport, but planes are getting out as they should be.
AAA says overall travel will be back up by about 1.5 percent this year, with more than 38 million Americans travelling more than 50 miles from home this holiday.
Most of those will be on the nation's roads with 33.2 million traveling by car.
Another 2.9 million will travel by train, boat or bus.
Just 2.3 million will go by air. That's down 6.7 percent from last year.
Experts blame crowded flights, tougher security, and increased fees.
Still, planes should be packed because airlines in general have cut the overall number of flights and they're trying to maximize the flights they do have by packing more people on to each plane.
So it's a good idea to get to the airport early because if you are bumped or miss your flight. There isn't as much wiggle room this year to get you on another fight.
The busiest air travel days will be Sunday and Monday, with just over two million flyers each day.
If you are flying for the holiday, travel experts offer several tips to help keep things moving at the nation's airports.
The Boise Airport says you should confirm your reservations.
Request special assistance such as a wheelchair in advance.
Arrive at least two hours early during the holiday season and be sure to prepare for security by not packing any items that are prohibited.
One other note, drivers are paying more this year.
The price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. is up around 73 cents from this time last year.
