MERIDIAN -- Thursday afternoon, 13 members of the Meridian Mayor's Youth Advisory Council helped create handmade bells to help the grieving town of Newtown, Connecticut. The bells are part of the Ben's Bells project, which promotes peace and healing through acts of kindness.

A mother in Tucson, Arizona formed Ben's Bells after her 3-year-old son, Ben, suddenly died. As she coped with his death, she realized simple acts of kindness helped her through the hardest days. She wanted to spread that same kindness to others, so she started making Ben's Bells. She hung the bells in random places around Tucson with a simple message to continue to spread along kindness. Today, Ben's Bells can be found across the country.

"The members of MYAC have big hearts," said Mayor Tammy de Weerd. "I am so proud of all the work they do to help our community and it is so uplifting to see them reach out to people in Newtown as they deal with this tragedy."
