LEWISTON, Idaho -- The latest count shows Chinook Salmon are either returning from the Pacific Ocean in low numbers or later than usual.

The Lewiston Tribune reports the tally of Idaho-bound Chinook at the Bonneville Dam have so far been disappointing. The low totals indicate the run is either late or far below expectations.

Uncertainty about the totals prompted the cancellation of Monday's Idaho Fish and Game Commission meeting. Commissioners wanted to set the state's salmon fishing season rules at the meeting.

In recent years, the annual spring Chinook runs have also started late. But state fisheries manager Joe DuPont says conditions blamed for those late starts -- like high and dirty water -- aren't present this year.

A run that falls below expectations could prevent fish hatcheries from meeting spawning goals.
