REXBURG, Idaho -- The Madison County Prosecutor's office in eastern Idaho says a special prosecutor will investigate the Rexburg mayor and city council for possible violations of Idaho's open meeting laws.
Madison Chief Deputy Prosecutor Troy Evans tells the Standard Journal there is sufficient evidence to trigger an investigation.
He is declining to comment on the nature of the evidence.
Earlier this month a Rexburg resident requested an investigation into the council's selection process for a new mayor when it chose Richard Woodland to replace Shawn Larsen, who resigned in September.
In a letter to the city, Maria Nate accused the council of having one-on-one conversations about the mayor's job and skirting the state's open meetings law.
City officials deny the allegations.
