BOISE -- The Idaho Department of Correction is auctioning off about 7 acres of land that was once used as housing for correctional officers at the North Idaho Correctional Institution in Cottonwood.

The land is just north of the town of Cottonwood, and the state cautions that it's being sold as is -- the 18 houses on the property are condemned and uninsurable, and repairs would be expensive.

The houses were built in 1955 for U.S. Air Force staffers who were working at a radar station. The radar station later became the prison site, and the houses were used by prison guards and other officials.

The auction is set for Aug. 24. The minimum bid on the land is $104,000, and people interested in bidding must submit a 30 percent deposit.
