COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho -- Authorities say a Spirit Lake teenager has died nearly two days after he was pulled from a mill pond.
The Kootenai Sheriff's Office says that 16-year-old August "A.J." Marksworth died Friday morning in a hospital where he had been in critical condition since Wednesday.
That's when Marksworth and 15-year-old Nathan Thiers tried to wade across the pond. Marksworth went under the water after he stepped into an area about 8 feet deep.
Thiers was unable to pull his friend to shallower water and Marksworth sank to the bottom.
A sheriff's deputy rescued Marksworth from the bottom and he was taken to a Spokane, Wash., hospital.
Authorities say they believe Marksworth's death was a tragic accident and there is no indication of criminal activity.
