BOISE -- The Idaho Transportation Department is working to make state Highway 21 safer for wildlife.
This summer, ITD will build an underpass at mile post 18.2. This will give wildlife another way to get to the other side of the road without crossing the street.
In the past eight months, 69 vehicle-wildlife collisions have been posted on the "Give Deer and Elk a Brake" tally signs.
By clicking on the photos on the right, you can see what the area looks like now, and what the finished underpass will look like. Once it is finished, the underpass will give wildlife a straight shot to the water's edge.
In addition to the path under the bridge, more fencing will be installed to help increase the use of the underpass.
The fencing and the bridge is being paid for by federal stimulus money. It will cost almost $800,000.
Construction of the wildlife underpass bridge will begin the first week of July and will be finished in early fall.
Drivers will be redirected around the area for a short time while the construction is underway.
