IDAHO FALLS -- Officials at the Idaho National Laboratory in eastern Idaho say 11 years of research and testing have found that fuel for new reactor technology is safer than anticipated.
Spokesman Paul Demkowicz tells the Post Register in a story on Friday that Tristructural-isotropic, or TRISO, fuel can reach more than 3,200 degrees Fahrenheit before any radioactive material escapes.
He says the ability of the fuel to retain fission products at such high temperatures means enhanced safety of the reactor.
David Petti is the director of INL's Very High Temperature Reactor Technology Development Office.
He says the discovery puts high-temperature reactors closer to being licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
