BOISE, Idaho -- An Idaho inmate will now spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was convicted last month of raping another prisoner.
Cody Vealton Thompson was sentenced Tuesday to two fixed life terms, one for rape and the other for being a persistent violator.
He was given 2 1/2 years in prison for intimidating the victim.
The 31-year-old Thompson has a long criminal record of burglary, assault, escape, grand theft, aggravated driving under the influence and eluding an officer, dating back to when he was just 16.
He was accused of raping his cell mate in September 2008. In November, he was found guilty by a jury in Ada County.
Idaho Department of Correction Director Brent Reinke has said Thompson's case marks the first time in the state prison system's 120-year history that an inmate has been charged with and convicted of raping another prisoner.
