BOISE -- The Ada County Highway District and Garden City officials broke ground this morning on the 36th Street improvement project.

The project will rebuild 36th Street between Chinden Boulevard and the Waterfront District, adding curbs, gutters and sidewalks to both sides of the street.

Garden City will install decorative street lighting and landscaping.

This is in the heart of an area that Garden City officials envision as a "live-work-create" district, where local business owners have the opportunity to live and work in the same location.

"The whitewater park that Boise has constructed, the Greenbelt access bridge, this coming (Esther) Simplot Park all are collateral improvements, and this is an important part of that entire project," said Garden City Mayor John Evans.

Construction on the $550,000 project will get underway on Monday, completion is planned for August.
