BURLEY, Idaho -- A Canadian company that staked a mining claim on the Sawtooth National Forest in southeast Cassia County has been drilling test holes.
The Times-News reports in a story published Friday that Western Pacific Resource Corp. has been testing the area called Mineral Gulch since 2011.
The company, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, staked the claim at a previous gold mining site in the Black Pine Mining District in south-central Idaho.
Scott Nannenga of the U.S. Forest Service says the company is also interested in re-processing material leftover from previous mining efforts.
Another Canadian company called Pegasus Gold Crop. operated a mine in the area from 1990 to 1997, removing about 500,000 ounces of gold.
Nannenga says restoration efforts have been under way since that mining ended.
