STAR, Idaho -- A major gas leak near Highway 44 has emergency crews working to contain a large amount of natural gas after workers punctured a line just after 9 a.m.
A crew from Intermountain Gas hit the company's 12-inch gas line in front of Republic Storage along State Highway 44 in Star, according to Reed Hollinshead with the Idaho Transportation Department.
Hollinshead said while flaggers immediately closed part of the highway, traffic is moving again.
"The concentration of the gas in the air is detectable -- you can smell it with your nose -- but we won't have to close the road," Hollinshead said.
Mark Hanson with Intermountain Gas said the leak wasn't a danger, and no customers should be affected. He says the leak should be stopped later Friday afternoon.
"The wind is blowing in a good direction. There's no road closed," Hanson said.
